Pony harnessing

The first thing to do when you're going to harness a pony is to choose the right equipment for all the equipment that's going to be used on that pony.
1) BOOTS - The boots are placed on the horse that is being harnessed, it being attached by the collar on the ring that should be on the wall of the stable. In any circumstance, the rider or trainer who is harnessing the animal, should not talk to him, such as turn his head, or open his mouth at the time of putting the bridle. Everything has to be done always with touches, which can be subtle, or more violent if the animal is very risky, or if the signals given by the one who is harnessing him are refused. In the case of the boots, a slight hit on the leg of the horse indicates that it should raise that leg so that it is in the harness. This hit is usually given with the whip of the handle, never with the hand, so the trainer who is harnessing the animal should always have another whip with him. The rider or trainer who is harnessing the animal should always have the other whip with him.

2) BARRIGUEIRA - After placing the boots, the barrier must be placed. Before tightening the barrier or even placing it on the horse, the trainer must give a dry blow with the whip handle on the horse's belly, so that it shrinks, facilitating the tightening of the barrier. After some time of practice, the trainer knows how much to tighten the barrier. It has to be extremely tight, so that the horse has a well-defined waist, and at the same time with the breasts much steeper than before placing.

3) GLOVES - Depending on the use to which the animal will be subjected in the session, the gripping glove will or will not be placed on the arms of the horse. These are gloves of long barrel, also made of thin leather, being that the two gloves are manufactured in a single piece of leather with the arms joined together which are pressed into the arms of the animal, by the back so that it stays with the arms completely immobilized backwards. This also causes the breasts of the horse to protrude more. These gloves are used only for demonstrations of the steps of ponies, for races without obstacles and for parades of fencing and special arrows. These hands of the owner do not have fingers.

4) BREAST RINGS - Most pony owners leave the nipple and nose rings permanently in their ponies, some even have them soldered in place, so they are permanently fixed. However, some remove the rings from their animals, and at the time of harnessing they have to be inserted. As on the day of the piercing of the nipple of that mare, it was done with a very thick needle, the beak hole of the breast of the mare, does not close as easily as that of an ear for example, but it always gives work to put the rings on a mare that has been long without being harnessed. One must pass before trying to insert the ring, a widener that every pony owner usually has. Then pass the widener three or four times and the ring is fixed.

5) BREAST BELLS - there is a very large variety of nipple bells, so a careful choice must be made of the bell that will be placed on the horse. Never under any circumstances should bells weighing more than 200 grams be placed. In addition to spoiling the animal, they do not have the harmonious sound of the lighter ones. Ideally, bells with 100 grams are heavy enough to produce an audible sound and do not force the breasts of the horse down too much. The chain that holds them in the rings of the nipples should not be too long, as they run the risk of touching too badly, they need to be close to the animal's chest so that with small swings of the breasts they produce sounds. It is feared that they shelter the bells too much, in this case it is advisable to remove the 200 grams and leave them for at least a month on the horse, until they feel the same part of the structure, and when they are used to it, they lack the same structure.

6) Nose collar - The nose collar is a recent refinement whose purpose is to be able to drive many mares at once, from one side to the other, as a single man with thin cords leads numerous mares caught by the collar on the nose. It also serves to keep the animal trapped in the wall collars, with short rope preventing it from sitting.

7) NOSE LIFTER - A new device is also being used that consists of a double hook that is attached to the horse's nostrils and is pulled up and fastened to the top of the saddle, causing the animal's nose to be pulled back and the nostrils to be opened wider, and the innovators say that with this little trick the pony's aeration capacity is greatly increased, causing it to tire much less and thus endure much better long journeys of work or play.

8) COLEAR - There is a huge variety of collars for ponies, which do not differ in any way from those of other animals. A good pony collar must have at least six fixed rings all around. These are common collars, for use in everyday life. On show days however it is different. For each modality that the pony will compete, a different collar is used. If she will compete in a step competition, a rigid leather collar of at least 15 cm in front by two in the neck should be placed. This causes the horse to be with the nose well pointed, also pulling the breasts up, keeping the back well back. This collar is used to show the degree of training that the animal has had, because the horse is unable to see the footsteps, nor can it control its steps visually, where everything that I do with intensive training, is just to put the animal on the collar.

9) BREAST PONY - A trend is now beginning, in which the collar has two strips in the front that hold two metal rings into which the breasts of the mares are tucked and which has two more straps that are tied to the back of the pony, the purpose of which is to make the breasts of the mares stiffer, making them swing less, and they put 300-gram heavy bells so that only the nipples swing there.

10) HORSE - HORSE is the most refined of a pony's accessories, and generally the prettiest because it is the one that appears the most. We recommend functional horseshoes for daily use and the most bouncy ones for parades. Horseshoes are a piece of thick leather and rings, which is placed on the horse's head, sharpened under the chin and on the neck. On the sides, near the cheeks are the eye patches, important pieces on many occasions.

11) CORPETE - The corpet is most used as an ornament and serves for solemn parades, as it opens wings, and is like the ancient corsets, having to be placed on the animal so tight that it takes two men to pull one on each side the ropes that tighten it.

12) PUNK - The tail in addition to being an important accessory for the mare, as it is her repellent of insects, is what complements and completes the ponygirl as an animal, in addition to being an inexpressively ineffective barrier to other exhibitors. The ancient tails were simply a console fixed to a strap that was passed between the legs of the mare being the console threaded in her anus, the tips of the strap were sharpened to the barrel. These consolos today called plugs have the narrowest tip, thickening in the part that is close to the strap and then forming a plugs, narrowing considerably where it is fixed in the strap. The purpose of this smaller plugs owner is that, after introducing the longest part in the anus of the mare, when it passes the smallest plugs for the horse, it serves to prevent the tail from slipping out of the animal.

13) CALVES and
This is a piece that is applied to the pony's waist, with a large leather part in front, on which the straps that will be attached to the plow are affixed. Usually two ponies are used to plow a piece of land, and they should be placed to plow after a heavy rain or even during the rain. The advantage of working in the rain is that the waters do not tire as fast as in the sun. The yield under the rain comes to be twice as much as in the sun, including because the ponies do not get dirty and there are no mosquitoes or annoying bites.
14) BLINDING - The blinding is an eye patch that leaves the animal completely blind. Its purpose is to leave the animal so conditioned to obey the commands of its trainers, that it does not have the slightest hesitation at the touch of the reins for example. Obedience to the breast reins is more difficult, because of the lesser mastery that the animal has in perceiving the touch in the chosen breast. The animal becomes so conditioned that races can be held with all the mares wearing blinds.
